SMEs, Innovation and Industrialisation for Europe 2030

The ‘deep dive’ workshop for the EURO-CASE Innovation Platform was organised by the Royal Academy of Engineering of Spain (RAI), with José Manuel Sanjurjo as chair and Francisco Jariego, member of the Innovation Council of IFI, in colaboration with Totti Könnölä, CEO of IFI, in Madrid on January 30-31, 2017. The workshop focused on ‘SMEs, innovation and industrialisation’. The work built on the background discussion paper and the results of the Euro-CASE survey. This provided a basis for the integrated analysis on industrial innovation towards the year 2030 through industrial platform ecosystems that engage value networks of industrial providers, customers but also research and technology organisations (RTOs), Universities, startups and other SMEs as well as investors, public sector agencies and regulators. Particular attention was given to the future role of SMEs and the barriers to scale-up. Also recommendations were drawn to provide inputs to European policy-making.

IFI attends the Conference on Transformative Innovation Policies

Totti Könnölä, CEO of the Insight Foresight Institute, will participate in the Scientific Conference on Transformative Innovation Policies and will be in the Roundtable organized around circular economy and industry 4.0. Totti will share his views on ”digital platforms as a lever to promote circular economy”.

Date: April 25, 2017.
Place: Areces Foundation, C / Vitrubio, 5. 28006, Madrid.

The Conference is organized by the Economy and Innovation Policy Research Group of the Complutense University of Madrid (GRINEI-UCM) and the Forum of Innovative Companies (FEI), in collaboration with the Ramón Areces Foundation.

The day consists of two different sessions:
I. Morning session: 9.30 to 17.00
II. Afternoon session: 19:30 to 21:00

In the morning, a scientific work will be developed to analyze the current trends of innovation policies and in the afternoon there will be a round table where companies and representatives of the administration will discuss the Spanish situation. The round table focuses on circular economy and industry 4.0 as levers that, in the hands of companies, can contribute to solving some of the challenges of society and, therefore, to align with transformative innovation policies.

Transformative governance of adaptive digital platform ecosystems from Totti Könnölä

The European car industry has to catch up

Francisco Jariego, a member of the Innovation Council of IFI, and Totti Könnölä, CEO of Insight Foresight Institute (IFI), write in Cinco Días (one of the leading economic journals in Spain) about the transformation in the automotive industry driven by technological advances and the platform economy.

Smartphones have opened the possibility of sharing vehicles in a simple way. Uber and others have developed platforms that connect drivers and passengers, making it possible to find a driver or share a car with just a one click. These companies are pushing for a change in the patterns of private car use, which will have important consequences.

The electric vehicle is reaching the levels of autonomy and cost that make it competitive with the vehicles of internal combustion. Tesla has strongly encouraged the development of this type of vehicle with a huge investment in the production of electric batteries and a coordinated bet on the development of solar energy.

The autonomous vehicle begins to be accepted as a real possibility in a not too distant future. After years of investing in the technologies that will make a driverless vehicle possible, what began as a highly speculative bet from Google (a moonshot) is, since late 2016, a new business unit, Waymo, under the umbrella of Alphabet.

Unleashing Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Europe: People, Places and Policies

IFI co-authored a book that sets out the elements for the design of a streamlined and future-proof policy on innovation and entrepreneurship in Europe. It is the result of a collective effort led by CEPS, which formed a Task Force on Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the EU, composed of authoritative scholars, industry experts, entrepreneurs, practitioners and representatives of EU and international institutions. The result of these deliberations is a set of policy recommendations aimed at improving the overall environment and approach for entrepreneurship and innovation in Europe and a new paradigmatic understanding of the role that innovation and entrepreneurship can and should play within the overall context of EU policy. These recommendations are based on a new, multi-dimensional approach to both innovation and entrepreneurship as social phenomena and to the policies that are meant to promote them.

The Task Force was chaired by José Manuel Leceta, former Chairman and Co-founder of Insight Foresight Institute (IFI), currently DG of Red.es. Andrea Renda, CEPS Senior Research Fellow, Totti Könnölä, Managing Director and Co-founder of Insight Foresight Institute and Felice Simonelli, CEPS Research Fellow, served as rapporteurs.

Unleashing innovation and entrepreneurship in Europe: People, places and policies from Totti Könnölä

Sharing Economy…… End of the game?

A lot of businesses within the digital economy are structured around the so called digital platforms. Apple, Google, Amazon and Facebook are platforms, and up to a 70% of the new unicorns, with Uber leading them, as well. In USA and Asia the companies based in platforms represent a substantial part of the new digital economy. Surprisingly, Europe, contributes just a 4% in the total capitalization of the global platforms.

It is clear, that we should act in order for Europe to take advantage of what is still to come with the digital economy, which is a lot. That’s how the EC understands it, recently publishing two statements regarding the challenges and opportunities that the digital platforms represent for the European market; and also about the sharing economy.
